14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Halema'uma'u Crater at the Kilauea volcano in Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii.
The lava lake at Halema'uma'u was pretty far below the rim of the crater but the orange mood lighting provided by Tutu Pele was nonetheless magical. Add to that the summer Milky Way arching across the midnight sky and you feel like you're on a completely different planet. The glow from the May 2016 breakout flows at the Pu'u O'o vent are also visible just to the left.
