22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Travel
Haunted Beach

All tourists have deserted this locale except a few fishermen and some lonely birds cawing in midday air, and the sound of sea wind creaking against the half-fallen door of the houses, which was once agog with activities during the fishing season. Frequent cyclones and ingression of the sea have left the villagers homeless in many of the coastal settlements in India. The photograph was shot in one such village on the eastern coast of India.
