Hawaii Fire Knife Dance
Hawaii is part of the United States, its history, its heritage, and its diversity. It strikes me as uniquely American to watch a Hawaiian performing a dance from Somao (partially a territory of the U.S., lest we forget). The fire knife dance at luaus has become as synonymous with Hawaii as pineapples (originally from Brazil) and macadamia nuts (originally from Australia). Incorporating these things in our cultural and commercializing them is as American as a cowboy on dude ranch in Texas or apple pie (with English, Dutch and Swedish roots). Shows like the Love Boat and Brady Bunch have made a family trip to Hawaii to see a luau like this part of the American dream for so many as well.
