Hawaiian Honu Leaves

As this young "honu," Hawaiian sea turtle emerged from her coastal hiding place in search of algae food, we were both caught up in the rough currents and sea waves of leaves and flowers surrounding us. Based on her size and my familiarity with the Oahu/Maui turtle release program, she was probably a two year old. For that entire winter into 2020, I encountered her on my weekly snorkel swims around Black Rock, yet haven't seen her in this area over the past year, a place where the coral ecosystems have greatly deteriorated.
