23rd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Wildlife
He turned around at smiled

When I was traveling with my husband and son, I took this picture of a parrot. I was taking pictures every day, all the time, mostly top shots of the ground for an art exhibition called "On the Sun's Level" which I exhibited at former quarries near Paris, France, in 2025. This image falls out of the series as it is a moment between the parrot and me. He did not move; maybe he was old or sick or just enjoying the attention and pleased by my soft movements. I am quite used to moving in a way that humans and animals feel reassured. So this is a fond memory of a colorful individual who allowed me to look deeply into his soul through my camera.
