Hellen Baleke - the female boxing champion from Kampala

“To learn boxing was a way to defend myself from all the violence in the slum. Every woman should learn how to defend herself, it is very important”, says Hellen Baleke. Hellen was the first woman to start boxing here at Rhino Boxing club in 2007, which is situated in one of Kampalas ghettos. She grew up with a single mother in a room with her two sibilings and more than 20 foster kids. While her mom has been the sole bread winner of the family for all these years, Hellen has gone back to the boxing gym everyday to try to make it. Her dream has always been to fight heard and become a famous boxer so that she can take her children and the whole family out of poverty. She has won a number of international medals, but to make it big as a female boxer in Uganda is beyond hard. Today she trains other young women in boxing and has opened a small organisation to support other single mothers.
