16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
Her

This is a picture of a woman I met in the Southern foothills of Rwanda. She worked at a coffee bean plantation. Along with the rest of her team, who were all women. This comes as no surprise since most of the coffee stations in Rwanda are women-owned and operated. Her demeanor, smile and work ethic stuck with me. She looked like she belonged on the fields. The coffee station was her kingdom and she was the queen. But more importantly, she was considered an equal.
