High in the Eucalyptus

Near Port Lincoln, our local guide led us to a small pocket of eucalyptus forest known for hosting a scattered population of koalas. Just before sunset, when I expected them to be fast asleep—as they are for most of the day—we were surprised to find a few individuals wide awake and actively feeding. This koala, perched high in the branches, calmly munched on fresh eucalyptus leaves as the last light of the day warmed the canopy.
