15th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
History on the Great Lakes
The S.S. Columbia and grain elevator at Buffalo, N.Y. Recently toured the S.S. Columbia a pleasure cruise ship over 100 years old that made trips out of Detroit along the Great Lakes. It is currently being restored while anchored alongside one of many grain elevators in Buffalo, N.Y. The elevators are a rare grouping still left in the USA and several are part of a grouping called Silo City that has become an up and coming arts exhibition space. The elevators are lit at night and the public can view art exhibitions inside their spaces. Both the S.S. Columbia and the grain elevators have a unique place in the history of the Great Lakes as well as the cities they served along their shores.
