12th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World

Over a width of nearly a mile innumerable streams arrive in the river Hvítá. After the eruption of a volcano lava field Hallmundarhraun arose. This field is water-permeable, but underneath it's waterproof hard surface.
