Huehuenche con sombrero

A young man dressed as a huehuenche stands out against the cloudy sky of Tetela del Volcán. His oversized straw hat frames a face painted like a skull, where his gaze seems to oscillate between playfulness and solemnity. His torso, covered in black paint with white bones, turns his body into a walking skeleton that visually connects with the church in the background and the gathering clouds of the afternoon. The photograph was taken in the town cemetery, in the midst of the Day of the Dead celebrations. Here, the huehuenche is a way of representing the deceased: a festive figure who, while dancing among graves, flowers, and prayers, embodies the blurred border between the living and the dead and reminds us that the memory of those who have passed is also honored with laughter, music, and color.
