16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
Human Constellations in Yosemite

Yosemite National Park is an incredible place for many reasons. What I was surprised to see when I looked closer as night fell and the stars start to emerge, were sparkles on the sheer face of El Capitan (the mountain in this foto). The sparkles are actually the headlamps of climbers that are scaling this cliff, and sleeping perched into the mountainside for the night until they resume their climb in the morning.
