Humpback Drake's Passage - Humpback whale breaching

The loud speaker went off a little after 5 AM while we were crossing the Drake's Passage on our way to Antarctica. It was our second day at sea, and the announcement woke us up. It advised us that a humpback whale was breaching just off the bow, repeatedly. I rushed to get into my cold weather outfit, grabbed my camera, and went on deck. It was several minutes after the announcement, and I expected the event would probably have ended by the time I got there, but this time the bet paid off. There, not far off the bow, was a humpback breaching over and over. No sooner did it disappear below the surface, then it came back up and did it again. I counted 38 times in a row. I have seen humpbacks breach before, so had several of the other passengers, but none of us had ever experienced anything like this continual encore. What a way to spice up the crossing.
