Hyena Scraps

This picture was taken in the Maasai Mara in October 2023. We were out on a morning drive when we spotted this hyena furtively seeking cover. As we got closer, the reason for its secrecy became clear. It had just landed itself a topi calf and was frantically ‘wolfing’ down its prize before other predators could get in on the action. Within a few minutes the feeding frenzy was over, barring a few scraps. For effect, I have vignetted the face of the hyena and the remnants of its ‘fast-food’ meal.
