18th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Icelandic Beauty

When researching our trip to Iceland, I quickly realized that photographing the horses was a must. What I learned while reading up on them was that they are a unique breed, developed in Iceland starting in the 9th-10th centuries. They are smaller than what we are used to here in the US. No one can bring a horse onto the island, and if one is taken off of the island for something such as a show, it is not allowed to come back. So after learning about them, I had an image in my head well before we even arrived of a flowing mane caught up in a gust of wind. We stopped many times throughout our trip to photograph these magnificent creatures and then came this one. This beauty who decided to show off her beautiful mane for me and allowed me to make my vision a reality.
