13th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Iceland's Glymur Waterfall

At 196m, Glymur has long held the title of Iceland's tallest waterfall. The hike up to this waterfall proved to be more thrilling than I ever expected. Having to traverse a mysterious cave, cross a raging river on unsteady stones and a slippery log, and trudge up a steep, muddy hillside made this view extraordinarily rewarding. Visual aspects of the scenery such as its deep emerald moss and aqua-tinted waters complimented the natural soundtrack of roaring falls and majestic bird calls. It seemed to be the closest one could get to Tolkien dreamland.
