18th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
I'm Free
I was in Maui; a place I go to feel safe, renewed, and to feel hope. I was on the beach right before sunset; the wind was blowing. My cell phone was on a tripod set to take a random picture every few minutes. I held up my scarf in the blowing wind. I had recently survived, and still working on surviving, a traumatic experience, and I felt free for the first time in awhile.
