19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
Impasto Process 1

This set of images came out of a frustration of trying to understand what fine art photography was. I was talking to my friend about it when I said jokingly, "If I take a photo of a work of art, does that make the image fine art?" And the idea came from that. I actually painted a set and my friend and created a 2-D image that looked flattened and without depth. When I originally looked through the viewfinder, I thought there was something wrong with my eyes. No matter in which direction I shot the image, the outcome was the same. I love that this allows me to explore a more painterly style in a photographic form.
