In The Arms Of A Hunter

While I love the exhilarating moments of being outdoors with the eagle hunters and their eagles, my truly favorite moments come when siting down to a meal to enjoy their company and hospitality. We visited the home of Dalaikhan, a Kazakh eagle hunter, in the Altai Mountains of Mongolia. We had been photographing other eagle hunters all morning and he kindly invited us to lunch. After our beautiful meal, we heard little footsteps come down the hallway. It was Sartai, his grandson, carrying a vodka bottle for us to drink. Amid the laughter and the toasts, he kindly answered our questions about his life and the life of an eagle hunter. Before we went on our way to photograph Dalaikhan and a few other veteran hunters, I asked to take a portrait of him and his grandson. Their relationship was beautiful to watch. It was filled with tender moments and loving hugs. When you spend time in Mongolia, really spend time with the people who live there, you too start to feel like part of the family.
