17th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
In the tall August grass
In the tall August grass you will find pleasant surprises. Abandoned pastures, devoid of the cattle, allow the grasses to grow tall and wildflowers to bloom. A tiny pond is now the focus of an explosion of insects, frogs and tiny wildlife - and those that hunt them. If you are willing to brave the tall grass and be very quiet, you might be rewarded with watching a sandhill crane hunt at sunset and enjoy his trumpeting call.
