15th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Altered Images
Independence Rock, Wyoming

Independence Rock was a milestone on the Oregon and California Trails as the emigrants followed the nearby North Platte River southwest from modern day Casper, Wyoming. If you reached Independence Rock by July 4, you could cross the Sierra Nevada Mountains before the snows fell.
