In the absence of the former Rajput rulers, Rajasthan has made headway in India but the state remains very poor. The strength of tradition here means that women have a particularly tough time in rural areas, where they are often condemned to life of drudgery and subject to elaborate strictures. The photographer took the Indian portrait of the woman in Jaipur in Rajasthan, India.
