I love early morning walks just before dawn especially in Martha's Vineyard. I travel to the island of Martha's Vineyard every summer. Those early morning hours have a different kind of rhythm. It's a slow easy kind of flow. This image of the sun rising over Inkwell Beach was captured during Juneteenth on the islane. Spending Juneteenth on the island was especially liberating for me as I continue to learn more about the history of how Black people created this community. I captured a few sunrise moments at the historic Inkwell Beach. The Inkwell or Town Beach in Oak Bluffs is the beach that was frequented by African Americans beginning in the late nineteenth century. The strand was called “The Inkwell” by nearby whites in reference to the skin color of the beach-goers. The name has since been transformed into a source of pride and inspiration.
