Man-Laï, who runs an event planning and creative marketing firm in New York City, made me promise to research the history of the Hotel Chelsea — where she has resided for more than 40 years — as a condition of allowing me to photograph her there. The Chelsea has been undergoing a prolonged renovation since 2011.
