22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Intensity
On a very hot mid-August day, I stopped by the USS North Carolina Battleship to see what creatures were about. As I was walking the boardwalk around the ship, I saw a few Anhingas and a variety of other waterbirds fishing and resting in the area. When I saw this juvenile, perched on the cofferdam that surrounds the ship. With the common wings-spread position, I just stood by watching this magnificent creature and didn’t even raise my camera until it started preening when I was able to capture this exquisite moment.
