Roots. Intricate root systems exposed by hillside erosion. University of British Columbia professor Suzanne Simard researches the mycorrhizal networks and the interconnectedness of trees. She has identified ‘mother trees’ that use their deep roots to absorb and redistribute water and nutrients to nearby trees that need it - operating in complex, interdependent systems.
