22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Into the Unknown
A herd of migrating wildebeest rush headlong down a bank towards the Mara River in Kenya searching for fresh grass on the other side. The frantic nature of these crossings means that dust is kicked up creating drama as the herd surges ahead once the decision is made to cross. This natural wonder is increasingly under threat from habitat fragmentation and a changing climate causing inconsistent rain to fall.
