16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
Isla and the Sipapu Blooms

My daughter, Isla, who is 7 years old, has autism. She struggles regulating herself, along with some social deficits as well. We were attending my cousin's bridal shower in Albuquerque, NM last August. As decorations, my cousin used wildflowers she picked the weekend before on a camping trip and froze them into beautiful ice cubes. My daughter, being the sensory seeker she is, was obsessed with these gorgeous and very cold delights, and enjoyed holding them and showing them to me.
