It's In the Blood
In March, 2018, my grandmother Ruth was diagnosed with AML-MRC, Acute Myeloid Leukemia, with myelodysplastic related changes. It originated as a disease called Myelodysplastic Syndrome, or MDS. She was 70 years old at the time. She could no longer touch us; she could no longer be in a room with us if we were not wearing masks. The most difficult experience of her life was also her loneliest one. In this image, I had my mother and grandmother reach out to each other, unable to touch, in order to convey to others just how grueling it was to be so close yet unable to offer her the comfort we wanted to.
