While we were parked next to a waterhole in the Etosha National Park, we saw a black-backed jackal hunting some bird that came to drink water at the waterhole. During the dry season large numbers of doves and sandgrouse come to drink water at this waterhole early mornings, as there is no other water sources nearby. The jackal kept walking around the waterhole waiting for the right moment to strike, When a large flock of birds arrive there is usually a lot of chaos amongst the birds trying to get to the water in the smallish water hole. Utilising the chaos, the jackal will jump and try to catch a bird – like in this image where he just missed out on a Namaqua sandgrouse. Such detail during the action can only be viewed via a still photo and not with the naked eye.
