14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Jackita Ridge, Pasayten Wilderness, Washington State
This is a picture of my improvised camp atop Jackita Ridge in the Pasayten Wilderness of northern Washington State, shortly after sunrise. Jack Mountain (9,075ft) is at left while my backpacking buddy, Oscar the cattledog, is at right, marveling over the vast wilderness before him. This was day 2 of an epic 5 day, 115 mile loop of this remote, unsung, and glorious region.
