18th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Jaguar in the Pantanal
We were on a small boat on the Cuiaba River in the Pantanal—in the heart of South America. A natural region encompassing the world's largest tropical wetland, the Pantanal is located mostly in Brazil but also extends into Bolivia and Paraguay. It’s home to an astounding variety of wildlife, including jaguars. There was no guarantee we would see the large cats, but after searching throughout the morning, we spotted this beauty on the riverbank.
