20th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
James

I took this picture of a friend and community legend, James, in Wabash, Arkansas. James is one of the leaders of rural community in southern Phillips County, Arkansas, where he is a business owner, farmer, community leader, and innovator. I took this photo as part of a series of the areas surrounding Elaine, AR, which was the home of a once-prosperous Black community of farmers and professionals. In the Red Summer of 1919, one of the worst massacres against Black communities occurred in Elaine, killing, terrorizing, and displacing untold numbers of Black residents while wiping out generational wealth in the span of a few days. James is a descendant of the Elaine Massacre, as are a number of people who have showed me great kindess in photographing the stories of the land.
