I am enrolled in a Master’s Program at Antioch University New England and last spring signed up for Food Systems of Cuba which involved a ten-day trip to visit Cuba’s urban agricultural cooperatives. In the 70's Rock and Roll music was highly discouraged in Cuba. Our tour guide on this trip was a rock and roll lover and he made a point to bring us to this park to show us John Lennon's statue. It was erected by the Government in the 80's to show more solidarity with the people's music choices. The glasses on the statue kept getting stolen, so they now have a guard who keeps the glasses in his pocket until a visitor requests to see them on the statute. The current guard is an 85 year old gentleman named Juan. I think Educational Travel represents the best in sustainable travel. It is more of a cultural exchange than just regular consumer tourism.
