14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Sustainable Travel
Joining the Herd

In my eyes, a sustainable travel project involves an activity or place where the environment is the first priority. My life mate and I spent our 10 year anniversary at the Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai, Thailand. This is a true elephant sanctuary where abandoned and disabled elephants find refuge thanks to the heroine and powerhouse, Lek Chailert. The elephants' stories are heartbreaking, but they now have a safe place to live and animal lovers travel from all over the world to admire these gentle giants. It is even possible to volunteer at this elephant sanctuary- volunteers spend a week feeding and caring for the elephants and the property and are fed three huge vegetarian meals a day. The people there are as well taken care of as the elephants. There is even a dog rescue on the property where no strays are turned away.
