Prior to a hunting moratorium in 1985, populations of Humpback whales were reduced by up to 95% worldwide. Since then, the species has experienced a remarkable recovery resulting in ten distinct populations emerging from endangered status. With overhunting pressure behind them, the Humpback faces new threats: entanglements, strikes from increased shipping traffic, and noise pollution which impacts hunting and migration.
