16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
JP Nomi Malone

Four years ago, I had a brain injury and had to relearn how to use my body, the whole language of English (aphasia), and all of my skills, including photography. Now, I am the best photography I have ever been. JP Nomi Malone is the name of a drag performer who worked with me on this photo. I love that this performer isn't "happy" or "cheerful." Instead, he seems furious about something, but we don't know why.
