16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Altered Images
Juan Molina, Plaza Morazán

"I am 61 years old. I have worked as a Shoe Shine since I was 8 years old. I am an orphan. I have lived from my shoe shine earnings all my life, and I have been able to provide for my children this way. People look down on me. They say that being a Shoe Shine is like being a thief; that I am a bad person. I have struggled all my life to earn a living this way and even created an Association of Shoe Shiners to improve our image.”
