18th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Jungle Focus

After a steep climb, we reached a large Mountain Gorilla family that was very active. Babies were playing with each other, adults were eating or moving around, but one gorilla remained calm and quiet all the time. This was the silverback of the group. While we were photographing his family, he made sure to keep a close eye on us and never left us out of his sight. - Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, Uganda - Status IUCN Red List: Critically Endangered and decreasing population - shot handheld
