18th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Mobile
This is Kahili Ginger, or Hedychium gardnerianum. It is originally native to the Himalayas and was introduced to Hawaii in the 19th century. It is named in Hawaiian for a feathered pole which is a symbol of royalty.
