Karolina

When in Kharkiv i wanted to photograph someone in the subway. Subway is a place where you travel to get to work, to get home or to go see friends. But in Ukraine subway is also a place where you can take shelter from the bombings. i saw Karolina coming out from the train and asked her if i could make a portrait. She had a beautifull smile. she agreed in a perfect english. She perfectly speaks Ukrainian, russian, Slovak and English and wants to learn german and french. It was important for me to have people to question themselves about what it can be to be a child or a teenager in a country at war, espcecialy in a city so close from the frontline. Karolina is 14 years old, she will be 15 next september. She lives with her parents and has a 8 years old sister and a 10 monthes old brother. She goes at school, just finished ninth grade and is planning to go to college. In the future she wants to be a doctor and help people in need. She does ballroom dance. She also enjoys having a walk with her friends and is helping taking care of her brother and sister at home. Despite the fact that Kharkiv is bombed every day, she appreciates life and the little joys of everyday’s life. Everyone lives day by day, enjoying the good things that each new day brings. When asking her what she wanted to say she replied : « It doesn't matter who you are, Ukrainian, English, French or Polish, always remain people, a person and not a beast. Appreciate every moment, spend more time with people you love and cherish, tell them nice words, love them and yourself too, because the war took many people from us, children, husbands, fathers, mothers and so on. Do good deeds and everything will come back to you 100x » .
