16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
Kids playing using just a hanky and sheer creativity.

Festivals or fiestas in the Philippines can last a long time and oftentimes, it is a respite from their daily hard living. In Balut Island, I was fortunate to be a part of this communities Church Thanksgiving event. A three-day event, one of the highlights was the afternoon games for the children and youth. With limited props and materials, the organizers had to be very resourceful hence this wonderful and a wee bit tricky game was introduced. Two people will hang on to both ends of a hanky and the rest of group will have to jump over it. They have to it fast so sometimes, little accidents occur (not life-threatening though) but at the end of the day, it brought laughter to everyone.
