Portraits of Craig, perhaps the most famous Elephant in the world currently. There are estimated around only 30 to 40 super tuskers left in the wild today. Super tuskers are defined as individuals whose tusks weigh more than 100 pounds each. These impressive tusks have proved to be their undoing in the last couple of centuries. Large tusks are what made them the prime targets for trophy hunters and the illegal ivory trade. Large tusks, if not for human intervention were supposed to be the desired trait and passed on in the gene pool more successfully. However, the reverse has transpired. Individuals with large tusks have been selectively targeted and taken out from the gene pool. Super tuskers like Craig who are more easily and regularly seen by tourists are a vital component and a true ambassador for their kind. Media famous individuals like him provide and anchor for all stake holders, policy makers and the larger audience. They help immensely in shining a light on the cause of their habitat and the species. Providing consistent reminders to humankind of what could have been or what should have been.
