22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
King of the Creek
A brown bear patrols a creek of Katmai National Park in Alaska, striking in it's confidence and mastery over the landscape. As visitors, we're very much in their space and begrudgingly granted the privilege to witness their daily activities which in early August revolves around the hunt for sockeye salmon. The migration of the sockeye each year is one of nature's greatest spectacles and each year is challenged by new threats such as mining and warming waters.
