16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
King of the Forest

Take a rare up-close glimpse into the eyes of a colossal Alaskan bull moose navigating through an Alaskan forest. As the seasons change, and fall arrives, moose shed their velvet and reveal their massive racks greater than five feet long. They are preparing to battle rival bulls for the ability to create the next generation of moose.

In the heart of the Alaskan wilderness lies an area prime for moose habitat with unprecedented backdrops featuring vibrant green spruce and hemlock trees. As I climbed a mountain and navigated through the thick concentration of trees, I began to hear vocalizations from moose. From the faint sounds, I heard a cow moose as well as a bull's rack smashing against the vegetation as he tried to follow her.

The cow was moving at a slow pace, so I positioned myself under a tree in a path I believed she would follow. After patiently waiting under large spruce tree lying on my stomach, the cow slowly trotted by. Moments later, the king of the forest, a colossal Alaskan bull moose appeared in an opening slowly walking towards me. My heart was throbbing as I photographed the bull navigating its way to the cow. This moment shows why Mother Nature is truly the greatest artist of us all.
