18th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
King of the Mangrove

The American crocodile is a protected species in Mexico, yet they are still being hunted for the illegal trade. Habitat destruction and water pollution is another reason they are threatened. This beautiful species is rather large, with some individuals measuring more than 4 meters longs. This crocodile was of a medium size, yet you can already notice his power and beauty. I was only able to take one shot of him because as soon as he saw our boat getting too close, he jumped back into the water. It's no surprise that even these powerful animals have learned to be afraid of us humans even in places where they are respected like the Isla la Concepción in Chiapas, Mexico. It's sad to think about how animals cannot live their lives in peace because humans still haven't learned to coexist and respect animals' habitats.
