23rd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
King Phoenix
Let me give you some context on the title of this picture. A few years ago, my Pops was going through a rough time. During that time, I reminded him that he was a phoenix. That, no matter what, he'll always find a way to bounce back and fly. Since then, his name in my phone has been "Poppadukes the Phoenix". On a recent trip back home, I took portraits of my parents because I know they'd never had professional pictures taken before and I wanted to be the one that captured their essence. I gave them both crowns and told them to be natural. After the shoot, I told them to keep their crowns somewhere visible so, on the days that they forget, they'll remember that they areroyalty.
