15th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
Kirghiz Child, Wakhan Corridor

This small Kirghiz girl was seemingly wandering aimlessly, but I think curiosity got the better of her. I had seen her a day earlier so, when I saw her again there was a sense of recognition but no words were spoken, nor was there any overt curiosity on her part. It was her territory and she was not far from her settlement. We stared at each other for a while, came to an unspoken understanding that all was good, and she turned and left.
