An elderly woman of Kyrgyz, it is often said that Kyrgyz derived from the Turkic word kyrk ("forty"), with -iz being an old plural suffix, so Kyrgyz literally means "a collection of forty tribes". The Kyrgyz form one of the 56 ethnic groups officially recognized by the People's Republic of China.
