17th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
La Princesa

Here is Diana, 8 years old, in Tijuana in the Benito Juarez shelter. The Benito Juarez shelter is now closed because of health issues the migrants are now scared in different shelters. Diana had been traveling with her family from Honduras. When they left home to join the caravan they only traveled with a backpack and relied on donations of clothes and shoes. That day the clothes donations came in, Diana managed to get the princess dress, despite the fact that other girls wanted it. "Lo agarre," (I got it) “hoy me toca a mi,” (today is my turn). That day, among leaking porta-potties, hunger, and barefoot children, an 8-year-old was a princess.
